Over the weekend, my family and I were roaming the Santa Monica Pier. There were lots of cool sites there but there was one in particular that was apparently very appealing to my younger sister. So we had to stop and take a picture in Forrest Gump’s shoes in front of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co Restaurant. I did too in order to please mother. As tourists, we liked having the opportunity to put on Mr. Gump’s shoes and sit on the bench next to a box of chocolates that we’ve seen him once do in the movie. Forrest Gump is an extraordinary example of the American Dream. Despite his low level IQ and leg braces, he is able to overcome all and eventually become a millionaire within the shrimping industry. This Bubba Gump Shrimp Co Restaurant and attraction is direct a play on this American fantasy theme.
The restaurant came about when Paramount Pictures reached out to Rusty Pelican Restaurants Inc. in 1995 a year after the movie was released. They wanted to create a restaurant based on the 1994 film “Forrest Gump.” Today, there are forty restaurants worldwide. In front of these restaurants, there is bench. A bench where you can sit in the shoes of Forrest Gump and imagine that anything is possible. It is a bench that makes you have pride for your country. It gives you hope that one day you too can be a millionaire within some industry of your choosing. It can happen to anyone because it happened to Forrest Gump.
