The Original Pantry Cafe is 24 hours and seven days a week restaurant. It is usually open from 12:00 AM to 12: 00 A.M., Of course, these hours have changed due to the current situation of the COVID-19 outbreak. Now, the restaurant is open from 7:00 AM to 7: 00 P.M. The Original Pantry Cafe located at 877 S. Figueroa St. Los Angeles, CA 90017. This restaurant was established in 1924 and moved to the current location in the 1950s. At the current location, the restaurant has been opened and fed the city of Los Angeles for 70 years. The Original Pantry Cafe has one room and 15 stool spaces. This restaurant is owned by Los Angeles Mayor, Rich Riordan. It was created to represent the iconic diner and “reflected in the shop’s prevailing throwback spirit” of the city Los Angeles (The Original Pantry Cafe, 2020). The Original Pantry Cafe was declared as a Historic-Cultural Monument on October 5, 1982, by the city of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission and Cultural Affairs Departments.

The Original Pantry Cafe was recommended to me by one of my coworkers. From my experience, this restaurant exceeded my friend and my expectations. We went to the restaurant before the outbreak of COVID-19 and somewhere in early January. My first expression of this restaurant is something from a black and white film. Waiter and waitress wore a white shirt, black pants or skirt, black bow ties or ties, black waist aprons or bistro aprons, black shoes for men, and white shoes for the ladies. They use a pen and small notepad to write down your order. Also, there is no menu book; however, there are menu chap boards displayed all over the restaurant wall. You order your food based on those items on the wall. When my friend and I dined in the restaurant, we ordered bacon & eggs, potatoes, toast (for me), ham steak & eggs, potatoes, toast (for my friend), and a chocolate milkshake. The food was amazing. I mean the crumble egg, crunchy bacon, perfectly cooked potato, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside toast, and a thick chocolate milkshake. Based on the food that I ordered, one can argue that you can cook these kinds of meals at home. It’s just a simple breakfast, what is so special about it? I can say that I bought not only a simple breakfast but also my experience, too. I paid for experiences to interact with people and enjoy a simple meal. I mean, just eat and talk before smartphones, social media, and the internet. If you are interested in visiting The Original Pantry Cafe, please keep in mind that this place accepts cash only.

That’s so cool, I didn’t know that much about the Pantry Cafe. I was just introduced to it this past semester by a group of friends and we ate there at like 2 in the morning. I loved the throwback diner style it has, especially the original counter with the stools.
